September 29 2020

Greetings Avalon Celtics Families and Supporters,

AMHA is pleased to provide this important update on our season structure and registration.  As many families are aware, AMHA has been preparing for a return to the ice while following all guidance, when made available, from our sport governing body Hockey NL and NL Public Health officials.  AMHA is committed to delivering a great season with teamwork, skill development, and fun!

As new information is shared with AMHA, we have adapted our Return to Hockey (RTH) plan.  Today, we are sharing some significant developments that will impact our season.

Registration Deadlines

Since early August, we awaited interpretation of a section in the Hockey Canada RTH referencing a September 30 registration deadline for eligibility for Hockey Canada / Hockey NL events for the 2020-21 winter season and Summer 2021.  AMHA had set an initial registration deadline of September 30 while we awaited more details.

Today, AMHA was advised by Hockey NL officials that Hockey NL is not implementing a September 30 deadline.  Instead, a typical final registration deadline date of February 10 2021 will be established.  The interpretation of this deadline is that players would have to be registered in a NL Minor Hockey Association by February 10 2021 to be eligible to participate in Hockey NL sanctioned events such as Provincial tournaments, Regional tournaments, High Performance Program, Development programs, Summer Camps, etc.

As a result of this new information and updated detail on Representative / All Star hockey contained below, AMHA has moved its final registration deadline to Wednesday October 14.  Players must register prior to October 14 in order to be considered for AMHA teams that will play in future events, ie. Provincial or Regional tournaments and other sanctioned events. Players wishing to try out for Atom A/B, Peewee or Bantam B have to be signed up by Wednesday October 7th.

Representative / All Star Hockey

In addition to the above update, today Hockey NL confirmed that Representative / All Star hockey proposed by the Eastern Zone can now proceed.  The format will be 2 – Line hockey with the league scheduling and administration managed by the Don Johnson Hockey League similar to Metro league play in past years, ie. Atom A/B, Peewee B, and Bantam B.

Final structure is being determined, but Divisions will feature AMHA 2-Line teams in;

  • U11 (formerly Atom A/B)
  • U13 (Peewee)
  • U15 (Bantam)

AMHA will be inviting players to try out for these leagues commencing Monday October 12 and times and groups will be posted in advance.  We will be posting additional detail on Rep / All Star hockey and the tryout process in our News section in the near future.  AMHA appreciates this information is overdue, however, we could not proceed until confirmation was received from Hockey NL.

AMHA is pleased with these latest developments as we navigate a most challenging 2020!  Please check our Web site frequently and email Steve Power, Technical Director, info@avalonceltics.com with inquiries.

See you at the rink!
