Female - Hockey Structure
To provide girls the opportunity to play hockey with girls in their own age bracket, the Minor Hockey Associations pool all the girls and a Minor Hockey Association hosts each division. The following are the Divisions and the Host Associations:
- Female Initiation - Ages 4 to 8 - Hosted by Avalon Minor @ St. Bon's Forum
- Under 12 - Ages 9-11 - Hosted by Mount Pearl Minor @ Smallwood Arena
- Under 15 - Ages 12-14 - Hosted by St. John's Minor @ Twin Rinks
- Under 20 - Ages 15-19 - Club Teams @ Various Arenas.
Players must register with their home Associations. The Associations involved with pooled divisions are:
- Avalon Minor Hockey Association
- St. John's Minor Hockey Association
- Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association
- Northeast Minor Hockey Association
- CBR Minor Hockey Association
The Female Initiation Program formed last year offers girls who are new to hockey the opportunity to learn to skate and also be taught specific drills and skills. The Hockey Canada Initiation Program is followed and the coaches are certified in the IP Program.
Under 12, Under 15 and Under 20 Divisions all participate in the Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Tournaments held two weeks prior to Easter each year.
This year, a team from Newfoundland and Labrador, will attend the Female Midget Atlantic Championship in New Brunswick, March 27 to March 30, 2008. Regional teams, which will be chosen from zone try-outs, will compete in a Provincial Tournament in January and the winner will advance to the Midget Atlantics.
